Boer goats

The Boer goat breed originated from South Africa and has since become the benchmark for goat meat production.

History of the Boer goat

Developed in the early 1900s for meat production, the Boer goat derives its name from the Afrikaans (Dutch) word “boer”, meaning farmer.

It is believed to have been bred from goats indigenous to South Africa, likely from the Namaqua, San and the Fooku tribes, with some crossing of Indian and European bloodlines being possible.

Animals were selected for meat rather than milk production. Selective breeding has resulted in a fast growth rate and excellent carcass qualities, making it one of the most popular breeds of meat goat in the world.

Boer goat Characteristics

Boer goats adapt well to hot, dry semi deserts and have a high resistance to disease. They are noted for being docile, fast-growing, and having high fertility rates.

The goats commonly have white bodies and distinctive brown heads and can be completely brown or white or have large spots of a different colours on their bodies. A buck from a proven fast-growing bloodline will command the highest price as Boer goats tend to gain weight at about the same rate as their sire.
